The following five cities are among the most affordable and top-ranked for digital nomads according to NomadList.
These cities are located in countries that offer digital nomad visas or otherwise make it easy for digital nomads long-term.
Istanbul, Turkïye
One of the best cities in Europe for digital nomads that won’t break the bank is Istanbul. According to NomadList, you can live in Istanbul for $1,774 a month.
It’s a beautiful city bridging East and West, with tons of things to do, delicious food, gorgeous scenery, and affordable prices.
Turkïye recently launched a digital nomad visa that allows you to live in the country for up to a year.
Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 55 years old, hold a university degree, and demonstrate earnings of at least $3,000 a month.
Without a visa, though, you can still stay in Turkïye for up to 3 months.
Bucharest, Romania
Another great city for digital nomads in Europe is Bucharest. The Romanian capital is a cool, vibrant city that reminded me of a slightly grittier version of Paris — and a whole lot more affordable.
Estimates from NomadList suggest that you can live in Bucharest for $1,970 a month.
The city is exploding in popularity thanks to its affordability. There’s also so much to do in Bucharest and it makes a great base for exploring Romania’s beautiful countryside.
Romania has one of the easiest digital nomad visas in Europe with a quick and simple application process. You’ll just need to prove that you earn at least $4,000 a month.
Rijeka, Croatia
While the coastal cities of Dubrovnik and Split are popular destinations for digital nomads in Croatia, the lesser-known city of Rijeka is actually more affordable.
You can live in Rijeka for around $1,902 per month. This budget-friendly port city is known as a gateway to many islands. It’s also less than two hours from Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, and beautiful nature like Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Croatia has one of the more affordable digital nomad visas, with a monthly earning requirement of approximately $2,750 per month. The visa allows you to stay in Croatia for up to one year.
Faro, Portugal
Portugal is the cheapest country in Western Europe, with a few cities where you can live for under $2,000 a month as a digital nomad.
The best among those is Faro, a city in southern Portugal along the Algarve. This is the ideal place to live as a digital nomad if you want to be right by the beach!
Life in Faro will cost you around $1,947 a month — not a bad price to pay in exchange for living in a dreamy, laidback city along one of the most stunning coastlines in the world.
Portugal offers a digital nomad visa that allows you to live in the country for up to one year. You are required to earn at least $3,550 a month.
Skopje, North Macedonia
Finally, Skopje is an underrated European destination for digital nomads and the cheapest city on this list!
As far as European cities go, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a lower cost of living than in Skopje, where you can get by on just $1,351 a month.
Skopje is a wonderfully quirky city that’s perfect for digital nomads. It’s small, safe, and affordable. And although North Macedonia is a landlocked country, stunning Lake Ohrid is 2.5 hours away if you’re looking for a getaway on the water.
North Macedonia does not currently offer a digital nomad visa, but since the country is not part of the EU or Schengen Zone, most travelers can stay in the country for up to 3 months without a visa.
